Signs and ways of damaging sensors

In the adjacent figure Zimmer and Peacock demonstrate how to damage a sensor through prolonged use, here we performed a series of cyclic voltammograms (10 x) between 0 V to 1 V at 100 mV/s relative to the on-board reference electrode in 10 mM HCl.  After each sweep an additional peak developed in the 500 mV region and increased with size after subsequent sweeps.  After testing the tarnishing on the WE and CE was seen.

Our solution at this time was to avoid high currents, though it is the opinion of this author, that it is worth avoiding too high currents, voltages and prolonged times at higher currents and voltages.
